Warranty
HVAC warranty is one of those topics that sounds simple until you’re trying to use one. Manufacturer warranty, labor warranty, parts warranty, registered versus unregistered, what voids coverage — the differences matter, and the time to understand them is at install, not after a failure. Here’s a plain-language guide to how warranty works on the equipment we install, plus how 7th Degree Heating and Air stands behind our work. For specifics on your job, call (913) 354-6552 and we’ll walk through your warranty terms before you sign.
Manufacturer Warranty
When you buy a new HVAC system, the equipment manufacturer warrants the parts — the compressor, heat exchanger, control board, and so on — for a defined period that varies by brand, component, and whether the warranty is registered. There are usually two big numbers:
- Standard limited warranty — what the manufacturer offers by default. Typically five years, though it varies.
- Extended (registered) warranty — the longer coverage you get by registering the equipment with the manufacturer within a window after install (often 60 or 90 days). Major components like heat exchangers and compressors often extend to 10 years when registered.
The catch is that registration is the homeowner’s or installer’s responsibility, and the extension only happens if it’s done in the window. We register every system we install, on your behalf, so you get the longer coverage without remembering to do it yourself.
Labor Warranty
Manufacturer warranty covers the part — it doesn’t cover the labor to remove the failed component and install the replacement. That labor cost is what a separate labor warranty addresses. Specifics vary by job type, and we’ll lay out the labor warranty terms in your install quote so you know exactly what’s covered and for how long. If you want longer-term labor coverage, ask — we’ll explain the options honestly, including their real value.
What Voids a Warranty
The common reasons coverage doesn’t apply, and how to avoid them:
- No documented maintenance. Most manufacturers require regular professional maintenance — without records, a claim can be denied. A maintenance plan keeps the paperwork in place.
- Unauthorized modifications. DIY tweaks, non-manufacturer parts, or work by an unlicensed contractor can void coverage.
- Improper installation. An undersized, unmatched, or sloppily installed system that fails from those conditions isn’t a manufacturing defect, so it’s not the manufacturer’s problem. Our Manual J / Manual S / Manual D installation discipline exists in part because it keeps your warranty intact.
- Skipped registration. Missing the registration window cuts coverage back to the standard limited term.
- Refrigerant violations. Improper refrigerant handling — for example, by a technician without EPA 608 certification — can void coverage and is also illegal. We’re EPA 608 Universal certified (EPA-608-U-457921).
Our Commitment
Beyond the manufacturer and labor warranties, we stand behind our work. If something we installed isn’t right, call us — we’d rather know and make it right than have you frustrated and quiet. We’re a small, local, family- and veteran-owned business; standing behind the work is how we stay in business, and it’s how we want to operate anyway.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How long is my new system’s warranty?
- It varies by brand, component, and whether the system is registered. Standard limited warranty is often five years; registered extended warranty on major components (compressor, heat exchanger) often runs ten years. We’ll lay out the specific terms of your equipment’s warranty before install so there’s no confusion.
- Do you handle the warranty registration?
- Yes. We register every system we install within the manufacturer’s window so the extended coverage applies. You don’t have to remember to do it yourself.
- Does my warranty cover labor?
- Manufacturer warranty covers parts but not the labor to install them. Labor coverage is separate and varies by job; we explain the labor warranty terms in your install quote. If you want longer-term coverage, ask and we’ll explain options honestly.
- Will my warranty cover failures from lack of maintenance?
- Usually not. Manufacturers commonly require documented professional maintenance for warranty claims. Skipping it isn’t worth the risk — a maintenance plan keeps records in place and keeps the system on schedule.
- What if I used another company for maintenance — will my warranty still apply?
- Typically yes, as long as the maintenance was done by a licensed HVAC contractor and is documented. We can pick up the maintenance schedule from there and keep records moving forward, including for warranty purposes.
